How does Semiology play its role in images and languages?
“Semiotics tells us things we already know in a language we will never understand"
Semiotics could be anywhere in our life, including words, sounds, body movements...etc. Therefore, semiotics has become a significant part of the analytical criteria for any visual product. In Roland Barthes’s Rhetoric of the Image, Semiotics is used in his analysis for his message identification. He pointed out that people will automatically ignore linguistic messages when the image appears as a messenger simultaneously. People would not consider the roles of images and language in a visual appearance consciously. When encounter comics, films, or still pictures, we automatically would not receive the correct amount of information as we do in literature, where only one type of semiotics appears in front of us. The power of semiotics is often being ignored because we are used to it, but semiotics are undoubtedly used to carry the message from messengers, especially in the form of an image. In my own opinion, the study of analysis (in literature, in art, in film studies...etc.) is basically the study of semiotics in a different format.
I think the easiest way to understand Semiotics is through symbolism. Today, many artists and writers use symbolism to offer their work a deeper meaning. The purpose of this act is to not make their purpose obvious, and this is the reason why analysis appears, to dig out the meaning. Signs, language, or maybe editing techniques and scene redundancy in cinema studies, are symbols, or semiotics. They are there for a purpose.
